Welcome to Mulberry Press!

The publications and audio programs of Mulberry Press are motivated by the deepest love and respect for the life and work of the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy.

The mission of Mulberry Press continues to be to make available the writings of several authors whose commitment to absolute Christian Science is clear.

Mulberry Press is managed by volunteers and we all consider this a labor of Love.  There are no salaried employees.  All funds derived from donations and sales go directly into funding Mulberry Press expenses related to: 1) keeping the publications in print with new high quality editions and 2) developing new publications (such as the new John Hargreaves Letters book due out in September 2010) and audio programs.

Our Founding

In 1989, Elizabeth and Joseph Handley of Carmel, California, decided to collect the various Association papers and other articles that had been written by their friend, Doris Dufour Henty, C.S., who had been an outstanding Christian Science Practitioner in London for many years. These papers were already in wide circulation, but often in incomplete or mutilated form, and often without any indication of the authorship. By collecting them into book form the integrity of these papers could be preserved. After the initial modest printing of 500 copies, more than ten thousand copies have been sold throughout the world since 1990.  Addresses and Other Writings is available on our website.

With these sales came also a demand for more of what readers termed "the same Science". Mrs. Henty had been healed remarkably by James Neal, and had spent time in Boston, getting to know many of Mrs. Eddy's household. Mrs. Laura Sargent once said to her "Mother would have loved you, you have her pure Science." It was this same, pure metaphysics which readers had recognized and, in response, Mulberry Press, as the publishing company had come to be called, produced more publications. These followed the line of pure metaphysics and again there was a worldwide response.  (The name "Mulberry Press," incidentally, came from the name of the road in London where Mrs. Henty lived.)

Following the publication by Mulberry Press of Doris Dufour Henty's book, there was a great demand for more papers and writings of this Christianly scientific nature.

The Christian Science Revolution in Thought, written by John Hargreaves, was published in 1993 in the spirit of Mary Baker Eddy's statement in her book No and Yes: "Let the Word have free course and be glorified. The people clamour to leave cradle and swaddling clothes. The spiritual status is urging its highest demands on mortals, and material history is drawing to a close. Truth cannot be stereotyped, it unfoldeth forever."

John Hargreaves with

Joe and Liz Handley

For many years John Hargreaves had been addressing Association meetings, and there had been many requests that his papers should be gathered and presented in more permanent form. Rather than a simple reproduction of these addresses, this book presents a distillation of the ideas they contain. While each paper stands on its own, one theme runs through them all, namely, that the study of Christian Science can only be perceived from a totally new framework of perception. That may appear to readers as revolutionary. Indeed, Christian Science cannot be grafted onto any existing interpretations offered by science, theology, or medicine. It cannot be perceived with the human mind or through human reason. It requires an approach that is as revolutionary as the subject under consideration. As Science and Health says, "The divine Principle of the universe must interpret the universe." (272:28-29)

Since 1993, many written and oral works by John Hargreaves have been published by Mulberry Press, which have been very well received in many countries around the world.  In 1995, As 'I' See It was published and the inventory was sold out by 2001. (In 2006, we published a new edition of this very popular book which is now available.)

In 1997, it was decided to collect and publish the Association addresses of Hendrik de Lange, another thorough and diligent student of the Bible, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, and the other writings of Mrs. Eddy.  His every statement was supported, in a scholarly and scientific manner, by passages from her writings.  Aware that hers was the full and final revelation, he found it intellectually inadmissible to deviate from it in the slightest degree.  The three-volume collection of his Addresses was published after a great effort and is now available on this website although quantities are limited. We are planning to publish his addresses in a variety of new publication formats.

Developments in 2006

In 2006, the management of Mulberry Press passed to several, under the direction of Barbara Hargreaves, who lovingly carry on the work as originally envisioned. The website was completely redesigned and expanded in 2006 to its present form.

In 2006, As 'I' See It, a landmark book by John Hargreaves and one of his booklets, "The Indivisibility of the Infinite", were both reprinted after several years of being out of print.  Additionally, the first edition of "Mulberry Press Reader" was published.  This 47-page booklet includes a unique collection of 24 previously published articles by John Hargreaves, Doris Henty and Hendrik de Lange and provides the reader with an easy-to-carry collection of superb writings very salient to claims arising today.

Developments in 2007

Mulberry Press published "Study Notes on the Book of Revelation", a unique and engaging 42-page guide to this exciting book of the Bible.  Written by Naomi Weaver, C.S., this provides readers with a metaphysical interpretation of Revelation consistent with Mrs. Eddy's discovery and absolute Christian Science.

We reprinted Doris Henty's, Addresses and Other Writings on Christian Science, a major project requiring us to create new production proofs and a new book design.

Developments in 2008

We redesigned and reprinted the booklet by John Hargreaves, "My Glorious Subjective Universe", one of the long articles he felt was among the most important.  We also digitally remastered the audio program that accompanies this booklet and now offer this as high quality audio CD that is compatible with all CD players.

In May we published two compilation volumes of the work of Hendrik de Lange.  Volume 1 presents 30 of his articles which were published in the Christian Science Sentinel and the Christian Science Journal.  Volume 2 presents a collection of 12 of his lectures written and delivered by him over more than two decades.  These volumes were compiled by Eleonore and Robert Watrous, who also compiled and edited the book, Principle and Practice, unique collection of Dr. de Lange's letters to his worldwide practice that is offered by Mulberry Press.

In June a newly redesigned and reprinted version of "The Science of Spiritual Reflections", another important booklet by John Hargreaves was published.

Developments in 2009

Also in 2009, we published Monitoring My Universe, a 365 page ompilation of more than 95 still-timely articles written by John Hargreaves and several people who studied with him.  These were previously published individually as "Pig Bucket" articles.  The manuscript was thoroughly reviewed and all citations were checked.

Three booklets by John Hargreaves were redesigned and reprinted, coming back in print after several years.  These include, "The Underlying Perfection of Being", "Principle's Unerring Direction", and "Generic Man."  Some 15 volunteers helped us to retype and proof these publications for which are are very grateful.

In the fall we published a new printing of the 3-volume set of Hendrik de Lange's Association Addresses.  This popular set represents a truly unique compilation of his remarkable addresses has been out of print since 2007 year and we are very grateful to have the opportunity to once again make it available. It was a major project requiring us to create new production proofs and a new book design. Happily, page numbers from the original edition and the new edition correspond.

We also published a new edition of The Christian Science Revolution in Thought by John Hargreaves, another major project requiring a new design and production masters.  Some 30 volunteers helped to retype the original manuscript for which we are very grateful.  For the first time, MP included a comprehensive index as part of the book.

Developments in 2010

In February, we will publish a new 2-CD audio program, "Conversation With John Hargreaves".  This was originally recorded in 2000 in Carmel, CA and released in very limited circulation. In 2007, we acquired the rights to this recording and it is in production.  The recording is high quality and the CDs comprises more than 90 minutes of John discussing a host of questions posed to him about the Science of Being.

Also in February, "Individual Salvation", a booklet by John Hargreaves will be published, followed closely by a newly remastered 2-CD audio program, "The Science of Spiritual Reflection."

The work of remastering all of John Hargreaves' audio programs will continue this year with several programs scheduled for re-release using commercial state-of-the-art manufacturing processes. The MP Catalog, available for download on the MP home page, has complete details of the audio programs coming this year and in 2010.

In September, we will publish the two-volume Letters From John Hargreaves, a feature-length book comprising a unique collection of letters written by John to those around the world who asked John for his spiritual insights and support in relation to claims arising in their experience.

Looking Ahead

As the current stewards of the legacy passed on to us by Joe and Liz Handley and John Hargreaves, we will not waiver from the commitment of Mulberry Press to absolute Christian Science. We fully realize that Mulberry Press is simply an illustration of the omnipresence of Truth in expression, celebrating the oneness of writer and reader as Mind rejoicing in My own completeness.

Without altering the actual writings and oral recordings of our authors, we will be publishing new editions of their works packaged in different high-quality formats -- ranging from books and booklets to new CD audio recordings and iPod downloads -- to make their ideas and insights as accessible as possible in the context of today's opportunities for creative packaging and distribution. We are also focused on keeping prices as reasonable as possible so as to encourage the widest circulation of these materials.

If your current email address is on our list, you will receive periodic announcements describing our progress and new products for sale.  We hope you will be interested and please know that we are very appreciative of your support and enthusiasm for this expanding work.

In closing, it cannot be said too often that although an individual’s understanding of Christian Science will continue to unfold, the full and complete statement of this Science is contained in the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. No other writings can substitute for these.
